Computational Humanities Series: Game Design

In our “playful century”, information surrounds us, abstracted in hugely complex global institutions and technologies through which we conduct our daily lives, intricately entangled data systems that only shift towards gravity (algo- )rhythm of these massive data constellations. The data. When we approach games as a cultural form alongside bureaucracy and rituals, we can begin to understand how these institutional forces legitimize their power and status. Video games, in particular, are well suited to model the digital and algorithmic systems of life in the 21st century and beyond. The digital humanities provide a useful toolkit for analyzing video games more fully than for their storytelling or even their mechanics, but as amalgamated and co-assembled agency structures. In this workshop, we will discuss the concept of ludo-literacy and discover free, no-code ways to start putting what you or your students know about games into purposeful action, even research! There are no prerequisites to attend this workshop – we welcome all skill levels and interests!
