The game has come a long way from its humble beginnings. The very first video game, Tennis for two, was developed on an oscilloscope in 1958, heralding the start of a new era in electronic entertainment. Indeed, technology progressed in leaps and bounds thereafter; first Pong, then the Nintendo entertainment system, then online games, and a lot of things that we haven’t even touched on in between.

Lest you think the advancement of the game has stopped, think again. By the end of 2020, the PS5 and Xbox Series X | S gained critical acclaim, and the worlds of browser-based online gaming and mobile platform gaming have also evolved dramatically. As we look to 2022, it’s likely that the game will continue to move forward and evolve. Here’s what we think the game development trends will look like in 2022.

Accessibility will reign supreme

The game takes a big step forward in accessibility, aiming to include more people who can enjoy this wonderful hobby. Prior to this initiative, many gamers simply couldn’t play all of the best modern games; the text might be too small to read, for example, or some gaming features might exclude people with certain disabilities. Now, however, that is changing. Thanks to games like The Last of Us Part II and guardians of the galaxy, accessibility is becoming more and more common. Expect this trend to continue in 2022 as more developers include accessibility options in their games and more publishers push to highlight these features as the standard of industry.

VR and AR will take on their full meaning

As it stands, many gamers are still not quite able to immerse themselves in VR or AR (virtual reality and augmented reality) game worlds. This is because the technology is both prohibitively expensive and somewhat niche; many still complain about motion sickness, and there still aren’t too many killer apps for VR or AR. This will all change in 2022. A good example would be the world of casino games; we can look to platforms like Novibet to prove that people enjoy playing online casino games, and advances in VR and AR will help people enjoy these games in a more immersive setting. This push will continue in the world of PC and console games as well, as more gamers feel the need to fully immerse themselves in fantasy worlds.

Writing will continue to improve

Historically, writing has not been a major part of the game’s history. Thanks to relatively primitive technology, writing has taken precedence over pure gameplay and graphics. These days, however, since developers are capable of so much more when it comes to storytelling, writing improves exponentially in games. Games like those mentioned above The Last of Us Part II set new standards for narrative design, and through titles like Subtitle and Special operations: the line, we also understand what interactive media can do for storytelling. Expect writing to expand even further into the game in 2022, with more complex and nuanced stories coming to the fore.

Diversity and inclusiveness are essential

A preponderance of video game protagonists are white males. This is still true today; some of the game’s most popular heroes, including relatively incongruous heroes like Mario, are white and male. Things are looking up for diversity in the game, however, with more and more heroes from diverse communities and backgrounds appearing strongly in modern games. As more voices are heard and more developers from different walks of life create their own games, we can expect to see more diverse heroes, villains, and worlds in the game in 2022. Despite a minority of ignorant dissenting voices, things are moving inexorably towards progress. .

Get away from loot boxes

Loot boxes are generally more of a publisher-mandated feature than a feature that the developers of a game are particularly keen on including. Still, they are part of the development process and must be factored into the design documents and the overall feel of the game. It is likely that developers and publishers will move further away from loot boxes in 2022 thanks to a generalized global decline against them. While publishers still feel comfortable including loot boxes in games like 2021 FIFA 22, we can’t see this going on any longer; gamers are fed up and governments around the world are changing legislation that would see loot boxes classified as games of chance. It seems the days of loot boxes are numbered.

Esport will grow

The esports industry has incredible potential. Although it has already grown exponentially over the past few years, we expect esports to truly explode in 2022. Thanks to the growing number of games in which competitors can participate, as well as the expansion of The reach of these games (it’s not just first-person shooters and MOBAs), esports is likely to become more mainstream than it has ever been before. This is also helped by the fact that the discipline will make its debut at the Asian Games in 2022, potentially paving the way for esports at the Olympics in the near future. If you’re an esports fan, we have a feeling 2022 will be your year.

NFTs and crypto will be a big factor in gaming

Love them or hate them, it looks like NFTs and crypto tech are here to stay. Many mainstream game companies are jumping into the NFT craze, and while many say it’s a doomed bubble, it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. As such, expect more companies to start selling NFTs of their artwork, or even entire games that are NFTs in and of themselves. Likewise, expect more games to start using blockchain technology. The ins and outs of how it actually works can be a bit mind-boggling, which is why the challenge for developers in 2022 will be to make this technology acceptable to a wider audience.

Long before the work-from-home mandate resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, game developers and other design professionals worked collaboratively no matter where they were. This means high-performance workstations capable of running mission-critical applications and supporting demanding workflows on the go.

Computer chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has partnered with Amazon Web Services Inc. to meet these demands in the cloud. AMD-powered Amazon EC2 G4ad instances help gamers achieve high levels of productivity without the impracticality, risk, and expense of deploying many high-investment desktops for use in the office, on the road, and on the go. home, according to George Watkins (pictured), product marketing manager for the visual cloud and data center GPU at AMD.

“The cloud, and then obviously in this case the AWS cloud, with the G4ad instances, really brings the whole pipeline together,” he said. “It brings together data sets and virtual desktops… as well as all applications in one place. Everything is centralized, and from an IT point of view, it’s fantastic. And, in fact, sending a workstation now is really easy. This is login credentials in an email to your new staff, and there are huge benefits from a staff perspective as well.

Watkins spoke with Jean Furrier, host of theCUBE, the live streaming studio of SiliconANGLE Media, during AWS re: Invent. They discussed how AMD and AWS are accelerating game development in the cloud, as well as how their tools improve pipeline efficiency and time to market. (* Disclosure below.)

Faster time to market

Besides giving game developers the computing power and speed they need to innovate, G4ad instances offer flexibility, efficiency and faster time to market, according to Watkins.

“A good example of this is if an artist is using or working on a very, very heavy dataset and their virtual machine or virtual desktop setup is not up to par due to a such a large data set, all he needs to do is call IT and say, “I need more resources,” Watkins said. “And, literally, in a matter of minutes, they can actually have this resource, again, improving that productivity, reducing that time.”

Unreal Swarm is another resource for increasing efficiency. It reduces the time it takes to turn lightmaps into a game by automatically adapting the build process in the AWS Cloud. So instead of doing it on the local station using traditional CPU and memory resources, which would take around 50 minutes, game developers can complete the task in the cloud in around four minutes, according to Watkins.

“This type of task that you would typically see with a 3D artist or with a programmer basically happens several times a day. So when you start to factor in a saving of 45 minutes several times a day, it really starts to reduce the time saved, and obviously the amount of cost saved for that artist’s time, ”Watkins said.

The NFT game Wolf game recently ran into a pretty serious issue that raises concerns about the development of blockchain-based games.

NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) are a relatively new technological craze that is getting a bit out of hand. Without going too far into the weeds, these essentially serve as digital authentication certificates. Companies such as Square Enix, Sega and Behavior Interactive have announced their intention to enter this field.

On the other hand, IGDA and Bungie have expressed concerns about how NFTs will affect game design and the environment. It was this old point – game design – that became a problem for Wolf game, one of the more recent versions of this growing space.

What happened with the Wolf game TVN?

Wolf game, at first glance, is a fairly straightforward NFT game. Players can get either Wolf or Sheep NFTs in the game. Sheep will generate the currency $ WOOL and Wolves will attempt to steal $ WOOL or even kidnap newborn sheep. (A white paper has all the mechanical details if you’re interested.) The bigger issue, however, is how the game was designed, as Dan Olson pointed out on Twitter.

“Wolf Game has integrated all of its game into the Ethereum blockchain”, one reads in a Tweeter by Dan Olson (via ResetEra). “A bug was found in some of their code that provided a potential exploit. They couldn’t fix it and instead were forced to recreate the entire game from scratch and issue entirely new tokens.”

If you’re curious how this could happen, it has to do with the nature of NFTs – once created, they’re essentially immutable. If you need to make a change, your only option is to create a new NFT and make the old one invalid. Doing something like this would undoubtedly reduce some of the appeal of the decentralized nature of NFTs.

The main mistake here was to put the entire code of a game on the blockchain like Wolf game made. As any Game Dev 101 student can tell you, it is nearly impossible to create a program without a bug, especially as its complexity increases. The problem becomes all the more serious when you involve real money and digital currency or tokens that only have value because of the perceived trust in the product. The seriousness of this problem can be best demonstrated by the fact that Wolf game had reported sales of $ 52 million in just five days.

TO Wolf game credit, the developer publicly disclosed the bug (which could lead to exploits) and plans announced for a third party code audit and the introduction of a bug bounty system. If another bug is discovered, it may require another round of NFT reissues.

For now, the migration of Wolf game NFTs continue while the developer works on code consolidation. The key lesson to take away here is this: NFTs cannot be changed once created and it’s probably a good idea to keep that in mind when making a game that involves blockchain.

What do you think of the situation with Wolf game? Do you think blockchain and NFTs can be useful in games? Let us know in the comments below!

Brainhub

The experts in JavaScript software development.

The process of building a development team can be a lot like starting a fighting game in which you choose characters to fight your battles.

There are lots of tips you can follow and lots of strategies you can try.

In this article, we break down three essential elements of an effective game development team:

  1. Personality mix
  2. Support roles
  3. Communication

Let’s see how to nail them.

Step 1 – Personality Blend

Keeping the mix of personalities balanced is crucial for each team member to feel recognized and comfortable asking questions, coming up with ideas, and admitting mistakes.

Some people are more open, others will need time to get used to their role in a cross-functional team, however, balancing different personality types helps alleviate such issues.

There is also a question of engineer-worker cultural fit. It is good to work closely with the HR department and assess the behavior, skills and ethics of each potential team member, and to find people with the right attitude and work ethic.

Step 2 – Support roles

Even in cross-functional teams, no one has all the answers. This is why support roles are crucial in putting the team at ease and ensuring everyone’s psychological safety.

By being close to the core team, support members can better understand people’s greatest strengths and how they complement each other. Such information helps put together teams for projects along the way.

Much of the work is also in the hands of game producers. They have an impact on the overall vision of the game, but above all, they support other experts – designers, animators, writers, UX / UIs – who are the real engine of any game development project. They are leaders who serve their teams, focus on their needs, prioritize their well-being and commit to their growth and development.

On a more practical level, this means that the work of the producers is very interactive. Their main tasks are to:

  1. Mediate between programmers, designers, animators, writers, UI / UX designers, developers, project managers and project coordinators;
  2. Divide the work into a sequence of deliverables, activities and tasks;
  3. Help their team meet deadlines and meet deadlines;
  4. Connect their team to the right people in other teams and streamline daily communication;
  5. Resolve conflicts and problems.

Step 3 – Communication

When it comes to communication in game development, it is often difficult to perfect your skills. This is especially difficult in large teams, where there are more people you need to get your point across.

That said, here are some handy tips you could use:

  • Always assume good intentions –Rushing conclusions when faced with problems only adds insult to injury. Instead, trust your team and give people the benefit of the doubt and you’ll be able to listen to them more carefully.
  • Stay open and transparent –Weekly team meetings, along with regular AMA and Q&A sessions, are always a good idea to involve your team in making crucial decisions together.
  • Adjust the communication frequency –Try to keep the right balance and avoid making everyday communication too loud so that it does not interfere with the actual work.

What’s your next quest?

Finding the right balance between team personality, the breadth of support you offer, and the quality of communication is just one of the quests on the road to building a game development team. effective.

What steps do you need to take next?

Here are some of our suggestions:

Quest 2: Learn the 4 Crucial Soft Skills for Game Development Leaders.
Quest 3: Build Confidence and Motivation in Your Team.
Quest 4: Choose the agile methodology that suits your team’s needs.

This article is based on Chapter 1 of “Choose Your Fighters – A Practical Guide to Building and Leading Development Teams” published by Brainhub.

Nikhil Malankar is one of the most recognizable figures in the Indian game development industry. He is not only the co-founder and CEO of GameEon Studios, but also the creative mind behind their upcoming project, Mumbai Gullies, an open world sandbox game set in the streets of Mumbai.

The India Game Developer Conference 2021, the 13th edition of India’s largest game development conference, was held from November 16-18, 2021. Many established dignitaries from the game development world attended and attended. shared their knowledge with the public.

Nikhil Malankar is also part of the organizing committee for the India Game Developer Conference 2021. In an exclusive conversation with Sportskeeda, he spoke about his experience and his hopes for the future of game development in India.

Nikhil Malankar, Founder and CEO of GameEon Studios on his experiences, Mumbai Gullies and the future of Indian game development

To start the interview, I would like to ask you about your inspiration behind game development and design. What drives you and what are you looking for in the future of video games?

Nikhil: When I was a kid I loved playing video games, but eventually that love for video games turned into a passion to modify them. I remember modifying GTA Vice City and turning it into something that looked like the city of Mumbai. I showed this game to a friend of mine and he asked me a simple question: “Nikhil, if you can modify a game, then why not make a game yourself?” “

It made me think that I would love to make an original open world game based in the city of Mumbai. And that became the very reason I started my company, GameEon Studios. This dream itself has brought me this far and all I have done up to this point in my life was to make it come true. I am so grateful that all these years of hard work have made me capable enough to execute this dream game.

Personally, I think the future of video games is extremely bright. They have now started to transcend real life and erase the boundaries of reality and the virtual world. Very soon we will be living in a world where gaming will become a critical aspect of our lives and everything will be quantified numerically.

Mumbai Gullies is one of the most anticipated titles in India. What can you share on the title? An interesting behind-the-scenes story you’d like to share?

Nikhil: We’ve just presented our gameplay, which has only been revealed to a limited number of people so far. The response to the game has been beyond anything I could have imagined. It’s great that the game is known to the masses. This sparked intrigue not only among the Indian public, but also among people abroad.

Additionally, we announced to IGDC that we are currently working on two titles: Mumbai Gullies Prologue and Mumbai Gullies The Final Chapter. Mumbai Gullies Prologue will actually be a shorter version of the big vision we have for the game, while Mumbai Gullies The Final Chapter will be what we envisioned the game to be in its entirety.

Your YouTube channel is quite famous among the game development community in India especially for your tutorials. What is the process behind creating content?

Nikhil: I have kept the process very simple for me. I make a list of all the videos I want to make, hit the record button with my phone in front of me, do a little editing and download it. The intention behind my YouTube channel has always been to share my experience with audiences, be it good, bad, or ugly.

However, lately I haven’t had enough time to devote to YouTube as my schedule is pretty tight, with production and other meetings lined up throughout the day. But now I have blocked my calendar for specific dates and times that will be dedicated to my YouTube channel because I think my business has benefited greatly from it as well. The motive has been and always will be simple: to help newcomers discover this industry and share my journey, which has now become somewhat of an open source journey for all!

What has been your experience with IGDC and its relevance not only to game development in Southeast Asia, but also to the global context?

Nikhil: The IGDC experience has been amazing. I entered the IGDC scene quite late. My first time at IGDC was actually in 2019 and I’ve been in this industry since 2013. However, after attending the first conference, there was no looking back. There is a ton of value in the conference because you get to interact and network with passionate game developers and like-minded business owners.

Each year I have seen an improvement in my relationship with IGDC. In 2019, I was invited as a speaker. In 2020, we became the Bronze Sponsors of IGDC and announced the Mumbai Gullies concept at the conference. Finally, this year, in 2021, I was part of the IGDC organizing committee. I firmly believe that if you want a career in the game development industry, you absolutely cannot afford to miss IGDC. And as I keep repeating, if you miss IGDC, then game development is not for you.

How do you think game development developed in India and how could it evolve in the future?

Nikhil: Game development has progressed by leaps and bounds. From something as simple as Ludo King becoming very popular among the masses to incredible gaming experiences like Raji, India has grown exponentially and is expected to grow further. Passionate projects turning into real businesses, the democratization of app stores, as well as the availability of the internet and resources for online learning have further catapulted the number of game developers in the country.

The future, in layman’s terms, looks bright for the country’s video game development scene. I am personally delighted to see and be a part of this growth journey of the game development industry in India.

“The City is delighted that Ubisoft is setting up a studio in Sherbrooke, where the Sherbrooke Innopole team has been working for several years on a business attraction project in collaboration with the Economic Development Coordination Office. The completion of this project shows that our city on a human scale is well regarded by major players looking for qualified workers attracted by an exceptional quality of life, ”declared Évelyne Beaudin, Mayor of Sherbrooke.

“These announcements mark a new stage in Ubisoft’s development in Quebec, nearly 25 years after the Group’s first arrival in the province. Thanks to the government’s leadership, Quebec has asserted itself as a leader in the creation and production of video games on a global scale, at the forefront of the technological revolutions that are shaping the future of our industry. Of our 20,000 employees, nearly 5,000 work today in Montreal, Quebec, Piedmont and Saguenay. With the Sherbrooke studio, Ubisoft is keeping its promise to be an important economic engine and to continue to invest in the talents and ecosystems that surround it, ”said Yves Guillemot, co-founder and CEO of Ubisoft.

“After the successful development of the Ubisoft studio in Saguenay, inaugurated in 2018, and its positive impact on the region and on the city of Chicoutimi, we believe that this fourth video game studio in Sherbrooke will have a great impact and will strengthen the predominant role of Eastern Townships in the area. This technological center of this region has become, over the years, a veritable pool of talents in many areas of high technology expertise. By opening this studio, we will offer new options to our current employees, offer new opportunities for local talent and actively support local initiatives and our communities, ”added Nathalie Jasmin, director of the Ubisoft Sherbrooke studio.

Submissions have been opened for the second season of the AT&T Unlocked Games, a women’s game development competition. The event invites female developers and female-led development teams to compete for a grand prize of $ 100,000 to fund their game.

Hosted by streamer Brooke “BrookeAB” Ashley, AT&T Unlocked Games is a game development competition that empowers women through visibility, access and resources. Six women will be chosen as finalists from a group of participants who enter the competition until January 7th.

To participate, the lead developer must be a female at least 18 years of age and a legal resident of the United States. Those interested in participating should submit their game information to the panel, along with a three-minute video introducing themselves, their team, and a story from their game.

There should also be a gameplay video with seven minutes of continuous gameplay and a playable game demo. Finally, a budget is required, showing how the $ 100,000 prize will be used for the development of the game.

The game’s rating criteria are general visuals, audio design, gameplay and mechanics, as well as creativity and story. They will be rated on a scale of 1 to 10 to determine the grand prize winner.

Six finalists will be announced on January 28, who will then participate in a live presentation on March 8. During this time, all finalists will present their game to a panel dubbed the “End Bosses”, which will select a winner and a finalist.

Fans who watch the showcase will also have a say in who they want the Grand Final winner to be and can voice that opinion with a Gamer’s Choice winner.

The March 8 showcase can be viewed on AT&T’s Twitch channel, and those who wish to enter the contest have until January 28 to submit the required documents.
